A month before the 2010 general election, Pat Quinn was audited by the state’s Auditor General William Holland in connection to the governor’s $54.5 million Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI). Since then, the case has been more or less forgotten by the public.
Today, however, state Senator Bill Brady is calling for a full-scale federal investigation into Quinn using Holland’s report as evidence of “pervasive deficiencies in [the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority’s] planning, implementation and management of the NRI program.” Among the claims made by Holland is that Quinn’s administration did not properly over-see how state dollars were given out and to whom they were given. Also, Holland claims that community organizations receiving funds hired employees without maintain time sheets .
In a pre-written statement, Quinn’s spokesman Grant Klinzman asserted that the issues in question, “were resolved more than a year ago,” adding that the NRI program is the appropriate response to the raising number of street crimes in the city.
