Monday evening the Bloomington city council will meet and discuss a $6 million bike path for Fox Creek road.
With the city out of money, the bike path will likely be paid for with a combination of a new garbage tax and a scheme to attach random city junk fees to property taxes.
Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner is attempting to satisfy a 3-year-old campaign promise to “fix the streets” by creating new streets with bike paths while ignoring poor paving, potholes, and other rough surfaces that scatter the city.
The reason for the new bike path to replace an existing and functional bridge is explained with a simple sentence: The bridge is inadequate for current and future needs of the community.
The city uses a few dozen pages from Democrat billionaire George Soros’ National League of Cities to justify the need.
Also from the Soros group, and from Monday evening’s agenda, is a proposal to “allow [Bloomington] the ability to collect unpaid utility debts by filing for a special assessment to be collected as part of the property tax bill.”
This would allow Bloomington to drive up utility fees, such as the new garbage tax, and attach them to property tax bills to pay for the bike path.
If passed, the new garbage tax would create a new fee, starting at $30, for ‘curbside bulky waste’ and will depend on the amount of waste. The controversial plan would, in the words of Alderman Joni Painter, create neighbor wars with city inspectors billing residents without permission for garbage placed in front of their homes.
The new garbage tax currently doesn’t have the votes to pass the city council.
Last week, Renner went to Washington D.C. to ask for federal funds to introduce even more Soros-inspired projects.
