I know that black people and lefties think everything is racist, so I’m not sure why I am surprised on a weekly basis when something new turns out to be “racist,” but I am. I mean, what part of “everything” don’t I understand? The latest installment in the white-people-are-evil drama has a black Louisiana State lawmaker accusing the Declaration of Independence of being racist.
Louisiana lawmaker Barbara Norton (D-Shreveport), argued that America’s founding document was racist during debate on a bill requiring public school students in the state to recite the Declaration of Independence daily…
“For the Declaration of Independence only Caucasians (were) free. And for you to bring a bill to require that our children will recite the Declaration of Independence I think it’s a little bit unfair,” said Norton during a debate on the Louisiana House of Representatives floor.
Norton definitely needs to brush up on her history. When the Declaration of Independence was written, no one in the American colonies was free, including the Caucasians. They were all under the tyrannical rule of King George. That was the whole point of the document.
There’s nothing inherently racist about the Declaration of Independence. It doesn’t include any language that says white people shall be free and blacks enslaved. It’s a big middle finger to England, letting them know we are starting our own country.
From there, Norton’s argument got even sillier:
Norton [said] that children shouldn’t have to recite words written at a time when slavery was prevalent, reading the document was used to bar blacks from voting at polling places and equality wasn’t extended to all people.
In addition to saying the document is racist, Norton also asserts that it was also a tool of implementing racist policies. Being able to read and write were skills a person had to demonstrate in order to vote. Does that mean reading and writing are racist? Probably. Everything is racist.
“Back in 1776 our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence, I don’t believe they had any idea or that they thought for a moment that America would be as diverse as it is today,” Norton said.
Using Norton’s logic, The US Constitution was written when black people were not free, so therefore it too is racist. The freedom of speech and religion should be ignored because they are racist. Even the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, was written when blacks were not free. That’s why it was written. Does Norton believe that to be racist as well?
Predictably, the bill that would have required Louisiana students to recite the Declaration of Independence was shelved before it could face a vote. You know how things work: if one irrational person has a complaint about something, it has to go.
