Border crossings between the United States and Canada are closed after an explosion from what is alleged to be an attempted terrorist attack with a car at the border security checkpoint between the two countries.
All four international border crossings between the U.S. and Canada in western New York were closed after the incident, according to WIVB 4.
Fox News reported that according to "high-level police sources" the explosion was an attempted terrorist attack. There were explosives in the car; two passengers in the vehicle were killed and one Border Patrol officer was injured.
According to the Niagara Gazette, the car was spotted driving down Niagara Street before it reportedly sped the wrong way into the security booths, where the car is assumed to have exploded.
A witness named Ivan Vitalii from Ukraine told the outlet that he and a friend were at a 7-Eleven store when they saw the car leave the parking lot toward the bridge. The man said he and his friend later saw what appeared to be the same car on fire near the bridge's entrance.
"We heard something smash," he said. "We saw fire and big, black smoke."
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) said that she had "been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls" and is "closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist," she added.
A video from inside what appeared to be a building at the border was also posted to X, showing an ongoing fire at the international crossing.
