The Problem With Progressives: Everything Is Now A Taxpayer-Funded "Right"

Progressives are often good people with good intentions. However, modern Progressivism has evolved into something so shapeless and amorphous as to amount to little more than a belief in “things that sound nice.” Mainstream Progressives have done an abysmal job of outlining precisely, in their view, the proper role of government and what (if any) limiting principle(s) apply to the state as a whole.

Everything Is Now a Taxpayer-Funded “Right”

Problems with today’s leftism begin with the ideology’s conception of “rights.” In the commonlaissez-faire view, rights are universal because they do not impose a duty on others to act positively on our behalf. Simply put, the proper view of human rights is that they prohibit us from initiating coercion against others.
Moreover, not only are the rights universal, but they are inherent to being human. To argue that the state confers these rights suggests that the state, through whatever “legitimate” institutions it may possess, can also take them away. This is an unacceptable possibility in a society of free people.
Modern Progressivism, however, has so warped the entire nature of rights as to turn almost any desired good or service into a right.
In this view, private employers refusing to subsidize birth control purchases by employees are violating a woman’s “right” to birth control. Business owners with religious convictions about homosexuality are denying “rights” by refusing to bake cakes for homosexual couples. Offering someone a job that pays wages below some arbitrary federal or state mandated minimum is now an act in violation of a “labor right.”
A service once voluntarily offered to the public is now a duty enforced by the violent arm of the state.
The list of our newfound rights is almost endless, but ten conversations with ten different Progressives will yield ten different sets of absolute rights. Perhaps the only common thread among them all is the demand that the state coerce all members of society into paying for all the goods and services to which we now have a “right.”

A Plea for More Precise Language

Pitching a wish list of other people’s property naturally requires a total deformation of the English language. The left has recently adopted many vague, imprecise, but passionate words into their lexicon.
“Equality,” “social justice,” “appropriation,” “racism,” “climate justice,” “micro-aggressions,” and many other terms referencing broad, nebulous concepts are now battle cries for stuff.
In practice, being “for” something like social justice means to be for just about anything andagainst just about anything! Do any two people have the same idea about what social justice means?
Groups as diverse as American universities, the Green Party, Italian Fascists, and even the American Nazi party share a commitment to “social justice.” This is not a minor point — expressing a vague set of guiding principles means that almost all government objectives will be legitimate, no matter the destructive means used to achieve those professed ends. Much like Progressive “rights,” terms like “social justice” can be used to justify the overwhelming majority of government action.

The Only Principle Is Faith in the Power of the State

As vague and misty as most modern leftist ideals can be, they do share one solid, bedrock principle: the need for continuous expansion of the government’s role in our lives. The government’s heavy handed regulation of our industries has imposed unbelievable barriers and costs to the supply of goods and services. No matter that this overhead hurts the poorest among us the most, to the Progressive, these costs are necessary in order to ensure we are protected from “greed” or “racism” or sexism” or “wage injustice” or whatever word-clothing that particular government expansion merits. The goal of the policy is vague therefore the government impediment will last indefinitely. The crusade will never end.
Meanwhile, the trillions of dollars spent yearly on welfare programs have done astoundingly little to improve the economic outcomes of the poor since the 1960s. Not even Karl Marx could have imagined a program of wealth extraction and transfer as large (in real terms) as that of the United States government. Yet, poverty rates for African Americans and Native Americans (two groups many of these programs were specifically intended to help) have been stagnant since President Johnson’s War on Poverty began.
The government’s intervention into our financial markets, healthcare system, education establishment and other industries has created structural disorder and price confusion. Bailouts, mandates, licensing laws, arbitrary restrictions, taxes on capital, massive monetary expansions, allotments of unwarranted credit, and other gargantuan government schemes have destroyed the natural channels of capital flows. Costs for even the most basic medical treatments have skyrocketed, another housing and stock bubble is in the horizon, and the federal student loan program has created millions of worthless degrees and a mountain of debt. The Progressive is un-phased by the government’s history of failure because he or she is certain that their vague principals simply require more action by our leaders. If we will only give the state and its army of foot soldiers more tax dollars and more power, the problem will surely go away.

When the Takers Make More than the Makers

When I was a lad way back in the 60s my father gave me some career planning advice -- “If you want to make money go to work in the private sector, but if you want job security go to work in the public sector. The public sector doesn’t pay as well as the private sector but the benefits are good and you’ll never have to worry about getting laid off.”
My father’s advice made sense. Government employees are ‘public servants’ and servants are not supposed to make more than their employers. But that was then and this is now. The times have changed.
With 2.7 million-plus workers (excluding non-civilian military) the federal government is the largest employer in the U.S. But now it seems that federal employees are also the best paid workers in the U.S. And when benefits are added in, the total compensation for federal employees dwarfs private sector pay --
Federal workers’ pay and benefits were 78 percent higher than private employees, who earned an average of $52,688 less than public sector workers last year.
The study found that federal government workers earned an average of $84,153 in 2014, compared to the private sector’s average of $56,350. Cato based its findings on figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
But when adding in benefits pay for federal workers, the difference becomes more dramatic. Federal employees made $119,934 in total compensation last year, while private sector workers earned $67,246, a difference of over $52,000, or 78 percent.
But it turns out that it’s not just federal government workers who are happily succoring at the teats of the private sector. State and local government workers are also sucking Joe and Josephine Taxpayer dry.
In Democratically controlled Wayne County MI -- where the Democratically controlled bankrupt city of Detroit is located -- 15 part-time county commissioners are each pulling in $70,000 per year in salaries, a salary that is just $10,000 less per year than the salary that Michigan’s so-called ‘full time’ state legislators earn. And that’s not all:
In 2010, the commission concocted a scheme to take advantage of a loophole in the pension system and allow themselves to qualify for a rich and rapid retirement benefit.
An investigative report last year by WXYZ-TV Ch. 7 revealed some of the pension jackpots. Commissioner Joe Palamara is guaranteed a lifetime pension of $33,660. Laura Cox, a former commissioner and now a state representative, gets $32,000 a year. Retired commissioner Bernard Parker took accelerated payments of $170,000, and then converted to a $27,000 annual benefit. Commissioner Jewel Ware’s pension will be $42,900.
These pensions are not for a lifetime of service; some were awarded after just a few years in office, and can be collected as soon as commissioners leave office, regardless of age.
Is it any wonder why Democrats and even some not so conservative members of the GOP are so fond of Big Government? Is it any wonder why our Democratic and Republican public servants are in no real hurry to downsize government at a federal, state, or local level? Government at all levels has become the goose that lays the golden eggs that enable the takers to make more than the makers.
The inventers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business people, and skilled tradespeople who take the risks associated with competing in a free market should be the ones who are rewarded for their toil, not the politicians and bureaucrats who would not even have jobs were it not for the taxes and fees that the private sector provides.
But this is the path our republic has been taking for years. Government -- the servant -- has managed to rack up more than $18 trillion worth of debt that we are on the hook for. Every politician that ever voted to spend money the government did not have or to raise the debt ceiling has had a hand in creating this problem, but so has every eligible conservative voter who has not bothered to vote because none of the candidates’ values perfectly aligned with theirs, or who says ‘why bother voting, they’re all crooks.’
The low information voters don’t suffer from such apathy or cynicism. For them it’s simple -- they vote for the candidate who promises them the most ‘free stuff.’ And all too often the candidates, mostly Democrats, promising the most free stuff get elected, and both the government and our debt grows and grows. Our public servants dream up new entitlements that require new government departments and more bureaucrats to run them, and then they congratulate themselves by giving themselves pay raises, better retirement packages, and other new benefits. And so the public servants have become better off than their employers. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that the richest county in the U.S. is right outside Washington D.C. or that, “Six of America’s 10 wealthiest counties lie within a stone’s throw of the Beltway.”
Our Founding Fathers envisioned a Republic made up of respected members of society who, having attained prominence in their chosen fields of endeavor would leave the private sector to serve the public for a period of time. But now our country is being run by career politicians and bureaucrats who have spent their entire lives in public service. Service to the political party, homage to the party leaders, paying your dues, and service to the special interest groups who provide the biggest campaign contributions has become more important than service to the people.
We need to make one thing perfectly clear to the next president as well as to every member of Congress: we are sick and tired of politics as usual.
The Federal Government bureaucracy needs to be downsized big time, the debt needs to be paid down even while defense spending is increased and our military capabilities are restored to pre-2008 levels. Our tax system also needs to be completely overhauled, Obamacare needs to be repealed, and Ron and Rand Paul may also be right – perhaps it’s time to take a long hard look at the Federal Reserve System.
There’s much more that needs to be done to fix all the problems our country is grappling with today.  If the GOP presidential candidate does win the next election and the GOP retains its majorities in the House and Senate, the Dems are going to fight tooth and nail for their secular fantasy utopian vision of what our county should be. We are not going to be able to reclaim our county in just 4 or 8 years. It is going to be a long uphill battle.

Obamanomics explained in one chart

You may be running into friends and relatives at holiday gatherings who claim that the 5% unemployment rate is one of Obama's success stories, and a good reason to stick with the Democrats.  Writing in Conservative HQ, George Rasley highlights a chart produced by Benjamin Weingarten in Genfkd that sums up the uselessness of the U3 unemployment rate statistic inevitably tossed out by the media to make the claim that the economy is recovering under Obama.  Most AT readers are sophisticated and realize that the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ U3 “unemployment rate” does not count discouraged workers who have given up the search for work.  The BLS calls these people “marginally attached workers,” and the criteria for blasting them into invisibility in the U3 stats are pretty easy to meet:
Persons not in the labor force who want and are available for work, and who have looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months (or since the end of their last job if they held one within the past 12 months), but were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.
But most of our friends and neighbors do not realize that the more realistic U6 rate, generally ignored by the media, does count the “marginally attached workers” as unemployed, and it is nearly double the U3 rate (currently 9.9% versus 5%).
So how do we sum up all this complicated information in one chart?
Here it is.  Show it to your friends who think Obama has been good for the economy:

Donald Trump talks about one of the great generals that Barack Hussein Obama forced out of the military

U.S. Marine Corps General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, a military hero forced to retire early by Obama:

Gen. James Mattis, known to his troops as “Mad Dog Mattis,” is retiring after 41 years of military service. The Marine Corps Times is calling Mattis the “most revered Marine in a generation.”

Mattis has been commander of the United States Central Command since 2010 and led the 1st Marine Division into Iraq in 2003. According to reports, President Barack Obama decided to force the Marine Corps legend out early because he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way, and forced them to answer tough questions regarding Iran.

image007

General James Mattis was an inspirational leader and a legendary wordsmith:

1. “I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.”

2. “The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot.”

3. “I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all.”

4. “Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.”

5. “Marines don’t know how to spell the word defeat.”

6. “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”

7. “The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.”

8. “You are part of the world’s most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.”

9. “There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, cunning, obedience and alertness, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.”

10. “No war is over until the enemy says it’s over. We may think it over, we may declare it over, but in fact, the enemy gets a vote.”

11. “There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. It’s really great.”

12. “You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.”

13. “You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.”

14. “I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.”

15. “Demonstrate to the world there is ‘No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy’ than a U.S. Marine.”

16. “Fight with a happy heart and strong spirit”

ISLAM NEVER CHANGES: An Afghan Muslim woman falsely accused of burning a quran is brutally beaten, run over, dragged to her death and burned by a wild-eyed mob of Afghan religious savages

So we are allowing Millions of Muslims in from Syria.  How many will want to follow only their rule of law?

This took place in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan in 2015, despite the US spending 14 years and billions of taxpayer dollars in a futile attempt to civilize this Islamic hellhole.

فرخندە-790x404

The shrieking  mob of devout Muslims wanted to throw her in the river so the dogs could eat her but end up tossing her body onto the river’s edge, pelt her with rocks, and then set her body on fire, cheering “Allahu Akbar” and “Long live Islam.” Police do nothing. Just another fun day in the Muslim world.

Two days after her brutal murder, a court declared the woman innocent of burning the quran. No one was arrested, no one was jailed.

Foul-mouthed obnoxious kids...this is the best the Dems can do to advance their agenda? This ad would make me swear off ever voting for them again if I WAS planning to.

Anti-Trump video a vulgar 10 year old dressed as Lady Liberty.
Anti-Trump video featuring a vulgar 10 year old dressed as Lady Liberty.
Remember that horrible video with the young, swearing Mexican kids yelling at Trump? Well those twisted parents have made another video, with another vulgar rant by a young kid. Kinda reminds me of the Palestinians, who use kids as human shields.

Obama's 'new' ISIS strategy: Change the narrative

The president's anti-ISIS strategy – to "degrade and defeat" the terrorists – is undergoing a facelift.  There is no sign that the strategy is working, so instead of trying to come up with something new, the administration has turned to military PR flaks to "change the narrative."
Military officials on the Operation Inherent Resolve task force have recently formed a working group to formulate a "new narrative," defense officials told The Hill. Separately, the Joint Staff has drafted its own messaging document.
The steps are preliminary, and are part of a larger effort to better communicate the U.S.'s military strategy amid heavy criticism from Republican presidential candidates who say Obama is losing the battle against the terrorist group.
"To say there's no strategy is just flat out wrong," said Army Col. Christopher Garver, public affairs officer for the Combined Joint Task Force -- Operation Inherent Resolve.
"If you want to have a debate about it, that's good, let's talk about it. But there is a strategy," he added.
The new working group will look at "how best to articulate what it is we're trying to do ... and do it in a concise easy to understand way," Garver said.
It is not clear who is overseeing or directing the effort, which appears to be internally driven within the military.
Still, the focus on messaging is in sync with the White House, which has said it needs to do a better job communicating the ISIS strategy to the public.
"In recent months and weeks we've been encouraging principals across the [U.S. government] to get out more to talk about their aspects of the counter-ISIL campaign and to new audiences," a senior administration official told The Hill on Thursday, using another name for ISIS.
Obama earlier this week in an interview with NPR suggested that the administration has not done enough to publicize progress in the ISIS war.
"There is a legitimate criticism of what I've been doing and our administration has been doing in the sense that we haven't, you know, on a regular basis I think described all the work that we've been doing for more than a year now to defeat ISIL," he said.

"And so part of our goal here is to make sure that people are informed about all the actions that we're taking," he added.
For the last seven years, we have seen this scenario play out time and time again.  It's not that the president's policies suck; it's that the White House hasn't "articulated" the policy correctly.  Hence, Obamacare is a disaster not because of the way it was designed and implemented.  It's a disaster because the public doesn't understand what a great and wonderful thing it is.
In a way, it's childlike and pathetic – like a kid putting his hands over his ears so he doesn't have to hear the truth.  The refusal to accept responsibility for failure may be the most telling aspect of the Obama administration as future historians examine the record.
Meanwhile, I doubt that ISIS cares much how the administration spins the war.  They continue to kill people and ignore the pinpricks that the U.S. military is inflicting on them.  I'm sure they care far more about Russia's efforts in this regard, as their military continues to hit vital targets – apparently without much concern about civilian casualties.
