WATCH: The Intelligence and Security Failure in Libya

Nearly one month ago, on the anniversary of September 11, terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens. The Obama Administration’s failure to take bolster security in advance of the attack and its muddled response since then will be the subject of a congressional hearing at noon today.
In advance of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Heritage will convene a panel of experts today at 10 a.m. to highlight the severity of the security and intelligence breakdown.
Though the Obama Administration originally claimed that the attack was due to an anti-Muslim video, it quickly became clear that these well-armed and well-organized attacks were anything but spontaneous mobs. The conflicting and often incorrect assertions from the Obama Administration reveal a potentially systemic breakdown in communications, intelligence, and embassy security.
Panelists at today’s 10 a.m. event include Peter Brookes, senior fellow for national security affairs and Chung Ju-Yung Fellow for Policy Studies at Heritage; Fred Fleitz, managing editor at Langley Intelligence Group; security consultant Thomas Varney; and Morgan Roach, research associate for Africa policy at Heritage.
