De Blasio Ramps Up Campaign Against School Choice

New York City’s far-left mayor Bill de Blasio is unsurprisingly a fan of the status quo as it relates to America’s public schools. As leftist unions and federal mandates ensure students learn only government-approved propaganda, these institutions fit squarely within the Democrat movement to fundamentally transform this nation.

While holding the educational system in high regard is one thing, the newly elected mayor is reportedly taking his activism to new heights by shutting down popular charter schools that offer parents an alternative to leftist indoctrination camps.

This week, he made the decision to shutter three such schools, leaving hundreds of kids and their families in the lurch.

Eva Moskowitz, who heads the three charter schools, said after receiving the news that it was “the saddest day for the Success Academy’s children, family, teachers, and school leaders.”

The order came under the guise of a campaign promise de Blasio made to curtail the operation of charters within traditional public school buildings. Moskowitz, however, said the mayor’s defense was insufficient.

“Right now,” she said, “our kids are being evicted … out of their school. It’s wrong and we need an explanation.”

She said only de Blasio could explain “what the motivations are for a decision that will hurt so many children now and, frankly, forever.”

Charter schools provide one of precious few options lower- and middle-class parents have when choosing where their children receive their education. Under his leadership, de Blasio has made it clear he wants to limit those options even further.

Moskowitz, whose Success Academy brand includes several other schools in the area, is not going to give up without a fight. She is planning to sue New York City’s mayor in an effort to reclaim the space for students and staff.

The disagreement between the two reached a fever pitch last year as de Blasio’s mayoral race was in full swing. He expressed his disdain over the fact that charter schools are able to operate under the same guidelines as other public schools.

“There’s no way in hell Eva Moskowitz should get free rent, OK?” he insisted.

Moskowitz, however, is determined to stand her ground and fight for school choice.

“We need someone who will put kids ahead of politics,” she said. “We are a public school. Public schools do not pay rent.”
