Compares Lerner's lost IRS emails to Nixon's erased Watergate tape

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin chose appropriately Flag Day to call attention to Lois Lerner, who has conveniently lost her entire internal email history from 2009 to 2011 at the IRS, by posting this Tweet:

Nixon Admin Watergate Communications 18 min gap; Obama Admin Lerner Communications 1,052,000 min gap. Difference? Not even a smidgen.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Darrell Issa asked, “Do they really expect the American people to believe that, after having withheld these emails for a year, they’re just now realizing the most critical time period is missing?”

But the analogy between Nixon and Lerner strikes at the heart of the matter as addressed by both Gov. Palin's tweet and an article written earlier today by Jim Picht at Communities Digital News:

The announcement is reminiscent of the claim by the Nixon Administration that over 18 minutes of taped Oval Office conversations were lost when President Nixon’s secretary, Rosemary Woods, accidentally erased them. The lost tape was from a June 20, 1972 conversation between Nixon and administration officials, and it was believed to be relevant to the Watergate investigation. Forensic experts were unable to retrieve anything of the erased tape, raising suspicion that Woods must have accidentally erased the same segment of tape more than once.

As with Nixon's tape, Lerner's "lost" emails are an outrageous impediment to the various congressional committees investigating the handling of Tea Party applications for tax-exempt status during the same period of time as the lost emails. But the sheer volume of missing date is anything but comparatively equal. I wonder if we will hear the same call for impeachment of President Obama by the Democrats as they had for President Nixon?

Remember the 18 minute gap in Nixon’s White House tapes during the Watergate scandal? Now Obama’s IRS top dog claims a communications gap of 1,052,000 minutes. Hmm. Wonder if the press will recognize similarities. Maybe a smidgen? The IRS claims it just “lost” two years worth of email records sent to and from the central figure in their harassment of conservatives scandal. Try claiming that next tax season: “Oops-a-daisy, computer crash, all records gone, so... just trust me on what I claim I owe you, IRS.” You know, Obama Administration, at this point why not just say the dog ate it? Watch now as the Administration tosses us a bone while the public demands Obama find those evaporated emails. And about that promise of transparency? About that claim to be “The Most Transparent Administration Ever”? All bark, no bite.
