ObamaCare Premiums Set to go up by Double Digits

The proposed Obamacare premium rates for 2016 are likely to see many double digit increases from the largest providers. The states with the largest average increases, as proposed, are New Mexico (51%), Tennessee (36%), Maryland (30%), and Oregon (25%). The final rates will be lower, but they may very well remain in the double-digits because insurers are seeing their first full year of claims data from ObamaCare’s exchanges, and the pool of insurance consumers on the exchanges are tending to be older and sicker than they were hoping to see.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services originally projected that for the exchanges to be financially stable; at least 40% of those enrolling in health care must be ages 18-35. So far, that figure is only 28%. But, as opponents of ObamaCare have been predicting for years, healthier and younger people have little incentive to join the exchanges because ObamaCare passes so much of the cost of more expensive patients onto them.

Since these low-cost patients aren’t coming on board in the necessary numbers, insurers are taking losses on the plans they sell through the exchanges. As Bloomberg’s Megan McArdle points out, the larger insurers can afford to take some losses on these individual plans because the exchanges are a smaller part of their overall portfolio. But in order to keep those losses tolerable, they are going to have to be allowed to increase premiums at a rate much higher than what consumers were led to expect from the “Affordable Care Act”. For example, Tennessee Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak said that although her team would try and argue down the 36% rate increase requested by BlueCross BlueShield in her state, they generally confirmed the insurers’ claims expenses, making large premium increases likely. Of course, these rate increases are on top of the cost spikes of the past couple of years, where many plans on the individuals markets have already seen double- and even triple-digit premium hikes.

Of course, even for those who have insurance coverage through the exchanges, their cost of care may still be too high. According to a study published by health care nonprofit Families USA one in four adults who purchased insurance under Obamacare skipped necessary medical care because it was still too expensive. High deductibles and copays in some of the less expensive exchange plans have meant that merely being insured isn’t ensuring adequate care for many patients.

This continued financial misery underscores the importance of Congress continuing to fight to replace ObamaCare’s unsustainable structure with principled reforms that incentivize competition, lower costs, and better outcomes for patients.

Krauthammer: Why doctors quit

About a decade ago, a doctor friend was lamenting the increasingly frustrating conditions of clinical practice. “How did you know to get out of medicine in 1978?” he asked with a smile.

“I didn’t,” I replied. “I had no idea what was coming. I just felt I’d chosen the wrong vocation.”

I was reminded of this exchange upon receiving my med-school class’s 40th-reunion report and reading some of the entries. In general, my classmates felt fulfilled by family, friends and the considerable achievements of their professional lives. But there was an undercurrent of deep disappointment, almost demoralization, with what medical practice had become.

The complaint was not financial but vocational — an incessant interference with their work, a deep erosion of their autonomy and authority, a transformation from physician to “provider.”

As one of them wrote, “My colleagues who have already left practice all say they still love patient care, being a doctor. They just couldn’t stand everything else.” By which he meant “a never-ending attack on the profession from government, insurance companies, and lawyers ... progressively intrusive and usually unproductive rules and regulations,” topped by an electronic health records (EHR) mandate that produces nothing more than “billing and legal documents” — and degraded medicine.

I hear this everywhere. Virtually every doctor and doctors’ group I speak to cites the same litany, with particular bitterness about the EHR mandate. As another classmate wrote, “The introduction of the electronic medical record into our office has created so much more need for documentation that I can only see about three-quarters of the patients I could before, and has prompted me to seriously consider leaving for the first time.”

You may have zero sympathy for doctors, but think about the extraordinary loss to society — and maybe to you, one day — of driving away 40 years of irreplaceable clinical experience.

And for what? The newly elected Barack Obama told the nation in 2009 that “it just won’t save billions of dollars” — $77 billion a year, promised the administration — “and thousands of jobs, it will save lives.” He then threw a cool $27 billion at going paperless by 2015.

It’s 2015 and what have we achieved? The $27 billion is gone, of course. The $77 billion in savings became a joke. Indeed, reported the Health and Human Services inspector general in 2014, “EHR technology can make it easier to commit fraud,” as in Medicare fraud, the copy-and-paste function allowing the instant filling of vast data fields, facilitating billing inflation.

That’s just the beginning of the losses. Consider the myriad small practices that, facing ruinous transition costs in equipment, software, training and time, have closed shop, gone bankrupt or been swallowed by some larger entity.

This hardly stays the long arm of the health care police, however. As of Jan. 1, 2015, if you haven’t gone electronic, your Medicare payments will be cut, by 1 percent this year, rising to 3 percent (potentially 5 percent) in subsequent years.

Then there is the toll on doctors’ time and patient care. One study in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that emergency-room doctors spend 43 percent of their time entering electronic records information, 28 percent with patients. Another study found that family-practice physicians spend on average 48 minutes a day just entering clinical data.

Forget the numbers. Think just of your own doctor’s visits, of how much less listening, examining, even eye contact goes on, given the need for scrolling, clicking and box checking.

The geniuses who rammed this through undoubtedly thought they were rationalizing health care. After all, banking went electronic. Why not medicine?

Because banks deal with nothing but data. They don’t listen to your heart or examine your groin. Clicking boxes on an endless electronic form turns the patient into a data machine and cancels out the subtlety of a doctor’s unique feel and judgment.

Why did all this happen? Because liberals in a hurry refuse to trust the self-interested wisdom of individual practitioners, who were already adopting EHR on their own, but gradually, organically, as the technology became ripe and the costs tolerable. Instead, Washington picked a date out of a hat and decreed: Digital by 2015.

The results are not pretty. EHR is health care’s Solyndra. Many, no doubt, feasted nicely on the $27 billion, but the rest is waste: money squandered, patient care degraded, good physicians demoralized.

Like my old classmates who signed up for patient care — which they still love — and now do data entry.

Sad to say, I have canceled my reservations as I do not think the Convention is worth the risk to my life as I was very much looking forward to the Convention. Many others of American Legion are canceling due to high risk of being shot and/or killed.

My reply:

“Hey Brother, You are wise for staying away from sin city (Baltimore). Baltimore police are reluctant to do their job for fear of being arrested. Clearly, the mayor is allowing the inmates to run the asylum. The only thing the vile local Democrat government cares about is protecting their liberal narrative. Baltimore's mayor considers lives and businesses acceptable collateral damage. It is shameful and evil. God bless, Lloyd”

My wife Mary said perhaps Baltimore will come to its senses upon realizing the financial consequences (at least $20 million) of allowing the thugs to wreck havoc. I said to her, you are mistaken, oh wise and beautiful one. The liberal zealots running Baltimore do not give a rat's derriere about consequences, financial or otherwise. All that matters is furthering their liberal socialist/progressive big government controlling everything and everyone agenda. If Leftists are nothing else, they are persistent, patient and unshakably focused on achieving their goals.

For crying out loud, the Baltimore Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby is running around acting like an anti-police pit bull, giving speeches in churches to rally the black community against the police. Dear Lord, what evil has overtaken my former hometown? What has so emboldened Leftist Democrats to dismiss all pretense of fairness and legality, openly displaying their liberal bias and intentions? 

Before I moved to Florida fifteen years ago, Baltimore was promoted as “Charm City.” I received a citation from former Mayor Kurt Schmoke for the song I wrote about my beloved city. A CD of my song “Hello Baltimore” was included in the city's Bicentennial time capsule.

Visiting Baltimore five years after I moved, a black Baltimore cop friend told me crime had gotten much worse. He said metal detectors were installed in public schools and almost every black nightclub. This does not support the Left's claim that cops are the problem.

My brother said his white girlfriend won tickets for a show at the famous Hippodrome Theater. The riots made her afraid to venture to downtown Baltimore. My brother dropped her and a female friend off at the theater door and picked them up immediately after the show.

Folks, there is a pony hidden in the pile of excrement which is Baltimore politics. The dire consequences of full-blown liberalism are exposed for all the world to see.

Who’s Hurt Most by Los Angeles’ $15 Minimum Wage

The Los Angeles City Council voted to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020, a move that will help some workers at the expense of others and lead to higher prices for consumers as businesses pass along the new expense.

Occupational Employment Statistics estimates that there are 837,000 people in Los Angeles County working in professions where at least 75 percent of the employees make less than $15 in 2020 inflation-adjusted dollars. (In 2020, $15 will buy what $13.41 bought in 2014, according to the Congressional Budget Office forecast.) Those professions include one in seven workers in the county. Since the proposed law only applies to the City of Los Angeles, workers elsewhere in the county will be exempt.

Which professions will see the largest impact? Job losses are most likely in sizable professions where current wages are far below $15 an hour and which can easily be relocated or replaced with a substitute for cheap labor.

One of the largest affected groups is food-service workers. In the four lowest-wage food-service professions, including dishwashers and fast-food cooks, most workers earn less than $10.31 an hour. Food-service jobs are safe from relocation—nobody wants to drive to Pasadena for a hamburger—but studies show that customers are very sensitive to prices. And higher costs could lead to a decrease in employment for food-service workers.

Using peer-reviewed research, my colleague James Sherk estimated that a $15 minimum wage would cause a 36 percent drop in hours worked in fast food. If the effects are the same for all low-wage food-service occupations, the “Fight for 15″ will cost more than 20,000 Angelenos their jobs in those occupations alone. This estimate includes back-of-the-envelope adjustments for the share of people living in the city of Los Angeles and inflation.

Other affected occupations include cashiers, waiters and waitresses, parking lot attendants, and those who pack and package goods by hand.

Los Angeles has an old-school garment industry employing 27,000 sewing machine operators, three-quarters of them earning less than $10.56. Unlike food-service workers, their jobs could easily be moved. National Public Radio interviewed a few garment workers last year, and one, Elia Reyes, said that she picks up bottles and recycles them for money when she can’t find daily work cutting fabric. With a $15 minimum wage, Reyes will find fewer jobs and may spend more days gleaning from others’ litter.

IMMIGRATION REFORM OPPONENTS CHEER COURT’S RULING ON LAWSUIT

A federal appeals court’s ruling in favor of 26 states that sued President Obama for his executive actions on immigration met with high praise from Republicans and law-enforcement officials, Newsmax reported.

Paul Babeu, sheriff of Arizona’s Pinal County, told the website that the decision is an example of “our republic working with checks and balances, holding the executive branch in his overreach of power accountable."

"There is hope in the fact that legitimate powers within the government have called the president's action rightfully into question and have held him to account," he said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also hailed the ruling, declaring that “the president’s attempt to bypass the will of the American people was successfully checked.” Abbott filed the lawsuit in December when he was the Texas attorney general. Following the court’s announcement, he tweeted: “The Constitution wins.”

"The separation of powers and checks and balances remain the law of the land, and this decision is a victory for those committed to preserving the rule of law in America,” said Ken Paxton, the state’s current attorney general. "Telling illegal aliens that they are now lawfully present in this country, and awarding them valuable government benefits, is a drastic change in immigration policy.”

Obama's last gasp effort at gun control

Looks like more Circumventing Congress and our Gutless Bastards on the GOP Side will Bow down like little wimps to this Idiot!

The Department of Justice is getting ready to issue up to a dozen new regulations directly assaulting the Second Amendment rights of American citizens.

The regulations represent a final effort by the Obama administration to impose restrictions on gun ownership before the president leaves office in 2016.

The Hill:

The regulations range from new restrictions on high-powered pistols to gun storage requirements. Chief among them is a renewed effort to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally unstable or have been convicted of domestic abuse.

Gun safety advocates have been calling for such reforms since the Sandy Hook school shooting nearly three years ago in Newtown, Conn. They say keeping guns away from dangerous people is of primary importance.
But the gun lobby contends that such a sweeping ban would unfairly root out a number of prospective gun owners who are not a danger to society.

“It’s clear President Obama is beginning his final assault on our Second Amendment rights by forcing his anti-gun agenda on honest law-abiding citizens through executive force,” said Luke O’Dell, vice president of political affairs at the National Association for Gun Rights.

The Justice Department plans to issue new rules expanding criteria for people who do not qualify for gun ownership, according to the recently released Unified Agenda, which is a list of rules that federal agencies are developing.

Some of the rules come in response to President Obama’s call to reduce gun violence in the wake of Sandy Hook. He issued 23 executive actions shortly after the shooting aimed at keeping guns away from dangerous people, and some of those items remain incomplete.

“If America worked harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one that occurred in Newtown,” Obama said at the time.

“We can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible, law-breaking few from inflicting harm on a massive scale,” he added.

Gun control groups have rallied around Obama’s call to action, zeroing in on polices that would keep guns away from the mentally ill and domestic abusers.

Congressional efforts to expand background checks and keep guns away from dangerous people have failed in recent years, but the legislative defeats won’t stop the Justice Department from regulating.

The Justice Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is looking to revive a rule proposed way back in 1998 that would block domestic abusers from owning guns.

As proposed, the regulation makes it illegal for some who has been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense to own a gun.

We'll have to wait for the rules to be published for comment before we know what exactly the government means by "high powered pistols." There are sport handguns with a high muzzle velocity, but they are used mostly in competition. The real fear is that the government will decree some popular handguns "high powered" and seek to regulate them out of existence.

The rule that would prevent people who have been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic abuse from buying a gun is being opposed on the basis that many domestic abuse cases do not involve the kind of spousal or child abuse that would disqualify someone from owning  a gun. 

The ATF plans to finalize the rule by November, according to the Unified Agenda.
But gun rights advocates are concerned the Obama administration will use this rule to unfairly target certain gun owners.

“That could be a person who spanked his kid, or yelled at his wife, or slapped her husband,” warned Michael Hammond, legislative counsel for the Gun Owners of America.

Most gun storage regulations are plain common sense requirements that responsible gun owners already practice. But the government could make those regulations so onerous that having a gun for home defense would become problematic.

Some of these new regulations will be in court for years, so the president isn't likely to see many of them implemented. Indeed, if a Republican wins the White House in 2016, it's likely the worst of them will be withdrawn anyway. But before Obama bows out, his efforts to circumvent Congress again and issue decrees that restrict gun rights will cost Second Amendment advocates a ton of money to fight them.

The Left Goes Insane

It was Albert Einstein who defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” On some levels, he was correct, but insanity is actually the substitution of fantasy for reality.  The guy who believes he’s Napoleon Bonaparte reincarnated and who is obsessively planning to re-conquer Europe is certifiably insane.  The woman who believes she is Gaia and therefore divinized as a goddess is a nut case. Both are completely out of touch with reality and everyone surrounding them knows it.

But wholesale denial of reality is not limited to just the occasional individual.  Insanity can and does afflict whole groups of people.  As Charles Mackay stated in his work Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1841),

“We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.”

How true.

Here in America, the madness of crowds is upon us.  The Left has so suppressed the knowledge of reality and has so affixed itself to delusion that the crowds who comprise it and who follow it would have been straitjacketed a decade or two ago.

What are a few of the insane ideas being promulgated as truth by progressives?

 One current insanity on the home front is the concept of “gender fluidity.”  Translated from newspeak into everyday language, “gender fluidity” means that any man can declare himself by fiat to be a woman -- or vice versa. 

Another is that the unborn child within the womb is not really human but is “potential human life.”  It is insane to say that a fetus is a potential human being.  It either is human or it is not.

Yet another sign the Left is completely detached from reality is the idea is that money may, like gender, be declared to be money strictly by fiat without any particular regard to underlying worth.  Still another illusory concept is the idea that no system of morality; no governmental structure, and no religion can be acknowledged as having a position of superiority in comparison with another.  Yet another is that the entire world order, material and societal, can be completely retrofitted in accordance with progressive thinking with only good results.

There’s more -- much more -- of course. Any reader could probably give at least a dozen more examples.

How and why did the Left (and sometimes members of the Right who join them) go mad?

We can look to Eric Voegelin’s Science, Politics and Gnosticism for some answers.   Voegelin states that advocacy of most twentieth century nostrums such as the quackery of communism require that “the thinker suppresses an essential element of reality in order to be able to construct an image of man, or society, or history to suit his desires.”

He writes that in order for the Left to maintain their dogma, certain realities must be excluded from thinking. “We shall not find the answer on the level of theoretic argument; for we have obviously gone beyond reason, if the relation to reality is so greatly disturbed that essential elements are on principle excluded from consideration.”

In other words, in order to believe in the current dogmas of the Left, including the spurious quasi religion of “manmade climate change,” one must suspend huge chunks of reality, effectually denying elements and evidence of the created order (science) as well as refusing to see the nature of humanity and society as they really are (philosophy and theology). 

But the Left’s denial of reality also means concealment of its ultimate goals.  Among those goals are the wish for absolute rule and the conversion of humans by force rather than by reason and persuasion. 

There is collateral damage that must be accepted if the Left is to succeed.  One is the certainty that there are things human beings cannot change just because humans want them to change and/or plan detailed programs to change them. Among those realities are the basic material and spiritual constitution of human beings and the powerlessness of humans in the face of an unremittingly unchanging natural order.  There are certain limitations built into the universe; certain fundamentals none of us can change.  The attempt to change or destroy fundamental realities results not in transformation of the fixed order of being, but in mere phantasmagorical fantasies that ultimately result in madness.  The attempt also results in the unmitigated suffering of humans as a neo-Gnostic elite, who believe they have infallible insight into how things should be, tries to destroy reality (things as they are) and to mold humanity and history according to its capricious image.

As Voegelin puts it:

“…the will to power of the Gnostic who wants to rule the world has triumphed over the humility of subordination of being.  The result of victory is not really the acquisition of power.  The constitution of being remains what it is -- beyond the thinker’s lust for power.  [Reality] is not changed by the fact that a thinker drafts a program to change it and fancies that he can implement that program.  The result, therefore, is not dominion over being, but a fantasy satisfaction…. The temptation [is]to fall from uncertain truth into certain untruth…the thread on which hangs our knowledge of the order of being, its origin and meaning, is very thin.” 

 

The fall in to “certain untruth” is almost complete within the ranks of the increasingly mentally disturbed Left. 

Further, because so much of what the Left is promulgating is in fact certain untruth, it must continually seek to cut off rational debates.  It abhors questions about the veracity of its dogma and praxis. 

Leftists believe it is vitally important to prohibit questions that might undermine them or their system’s credibility.  Nothing, absolutely nothing, about the dogma of the Left is to be questioned.  It is only to be believed.  That is one reason why the Left’s current chief flag bearer, Hillary Clinton, so assiduously avoids questions.  One must have absolute faith in her.

Believing Christians and devout Jews have ideas about the created order that are the polar opposite of the Left.  They believe that created reality is a God given thing to which humans gratefully accommodate themselves.  They do not believe that the created order was or is made by human beings.

For progressives, such beliefs are to be silenced and quashed.  Progressive dogma is as sacred as Holy writ, but unlike the scriptures, it is completely safe from exegesis or criticism.  As Voegelin points out, Leftists are types for “whom a human inquiry has become a practical impossibility.”

In order to silence questions from the masses which it seeks to indoctrinate, progressives seek to erase opposition by shutting down free speech while pursuing the total destruction of any resistance.  Meanwhile, it continuously indulges in what Voegelin describes as “stubborn, demonic persistence in actions that passion incites.”

In sum, the Left’s neo-Gnosticism and its accompanying lust for power and authority mean the creation of multifarious governmental, bureaucratic and administrative initiatives designed to destroy the current societal order and to “fundamentally transform” the nation and the world according to the fantastical dreams of an elite. 

To accomplish such a transformation requires the ascendance of atheism and the deification of Man as Superman.  The human being becomes the ruler of history and God is dead.  In the place of the destruction of the Christian concepts of salvation and redemption, the Left substitutes its own salvific doctrines created entirely from the brains of elite humans who have godlike clairvoyance concerning the future order of being.  God is permitted no input.  Heaven will be a new world order springing like the phoenix from the ashes of the civilization we presently know and live in.  No cost, human or material, is too great in order to achieve the leftist dream.  Gotterdammerung is a necessary and even beautiful thing.

Ultimately, as Voegelin points out, neo-gnostism requires the murder of God and the total elevation of man’s power. “The aim of parousiastic Gnosticism [as in Marx, Nietzsche, and Heidigger] is to destroy the order of being, which is experienced as defective and unjust, and through man’s creative power to replace it with a perfect and just order.”

The Left, in all its permutations, has fallen for the oldest lie in history.  “Ye shall be as gods.”

As we observe the destruction being wreaked on our beloved country by leftist progressives, it is obvious that their obsession with destroying the old order and fundamentally transforming the world is ultimately an exercise in futility.  Meanwhile, the attempts to create a fantasy society are having disastrous consequences. 

The core created order, no matter how it is tinkered with, and no matter how much destruction the Left attempts to achieve, remains unperturbed.  It is simply not within man’s purview to change the fundamental world order established by the Creator.  It is man’s glorious task to submit to, cooperate with and to be part of the divine redemptive plan for humanity and creation.

There is hope.

It may be that great thinkers of the Judeo-Christian tradition may rise up to destroy the insane leftist mental construct that will be, if not confronted and destroyed, the Moloch that burns the magnificent edifice of Western Judeo-Christian thought to ashes.

It’s no secret that Obama has consistently fought to minimize association with his mentor throughout his teen years– known communist, Frank Marshall Davis. In case you’re a little unsure about who Davis was, here are a few fun facts:

• He was a member of Communist Party USAH, FBI files revealed his card number was CP #47544.
• He was a semi-skilled photographer with a keen interest in nudes.
• He was a prototype of the loyal Soviet patriot, so radical that the FBI placed him on the federal government’s Security Index.
• He edited and wrote for communist newspapers in both Chicago and Honolulu, dutifully serving the cause.
• His poetry included one lovely passage where he called Jesus the n-word.
• Being on the fed’s Security Index meant he could be arrested at any time.

In his book, “Dreams From My Father,” and in his audiobook version of “Dreams,” Obama failed to refer to his mentor as anything other than “Frank.” Surely, Obama is educated enough to know that openly admitting his attachment to this vile man would be a bad idea.Never in the history of America has our President been mentored by such an alarming figure.

The leaked footage below shows the young future president on his book tour at the Cambridge Public Library. The Barack Obama in this 1995 clip isn’t just open about who “Frank” is, he also proudly explains how the man “schooled” him on how racist white people are. Watch him explain why someone who considers this worldview as being “paranoid” is just as terrible as calling him the n-word.

A Recession Within A Recession

On Friday, the federal government announced that the U.S. economy contracted at a 0.7 percent annual rate during the first quarter of 2015.  This unexpected shrinking of the economy is being primarily blamed on “harsh” weather during the first three months of this year and on the strengthening of the U.S. dollar.  Most economists are confident that U.S. GDP will rebound back into positive territory when the numbers for the second quarter come out, but if that does not happen we will officially meet the government’s criteria for being in another “recession”.  To make sure that the numbers for Q2 will look “acceptable”, the Bureau of Economic Analysis is about to change the way that it calculates GDP again.  They are just going to keep “seasonally adjusting” the numbers until they get what they want.  At this point, the government numbers are so full of “assumptions” and “estimates” that they don’t really bear much resemblance to reality anyway.  In fact, John Williams of shadowstats.com has calculated that if the government was actually using honest numbers that they would show that we have continually been in a recession since 2005.  That is why I am referring to this as a “recession within a recession”.  Most people can look around and see that economic conditions for most Americans are not good, and now they are about to get even worse.

For quite a while I have been warning that another economic downturn was coming.  Well, now we have official confirmation from the Obama administration that it is happening.  The following is an excerpt from the statement that the Bureau of Economic Analysis released on Friday…

Real gross domestic product — the value of the production of goods and services in the United
States, adjusted for price changes — decreased at an annual rate of 0.7 percent in the first quarter of
2015, according to the “second” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth
quarter, real GDP increased 2.2 percent.

The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for
the “advance” estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, real GDP increased 0.2 percent.
With the second estimate for the first quarter, imports increased more and private inventory investment
increased less than previously estimated (for more information, see “Revisions” on page 3).

The decrease in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected negative contributions from
exports, nonresidential fixed investment, and state and local government spending that were partly offset by positive contributions from personal consumption expenditures (PCE), private inventory investment, and residential fixed investment.

And actually, Q1 GDP would have been far worse if not for a very large inventory buildup.  Without that inventory buildup, Q1 GDP would have been in the neighborhood ofnegative three percent according to Zero Hedge.  Despite the happy face that most analysts are putting on these numbers, the truth is that they reveal some deeply troubling trends.

One of the things that is driving this current downturn is the fact that our trade balance continues to get even worse.  In other words, the gap between how much we buy from the rest of the world and how much we sell to the rest of the world is growing.

During the first quarter, imports surged by 5.6 percent.  That means that we are buying more from the rest of the planet than we did before.

Unfortunately, during the first quarter of this year exports dropped by a staggering 7.6 percent.  That means that the amount of stuff that we are selling to the rest of the planet is falling precipitously.

When our trade deficit expands, we lose jobs, businesses and economic infrastructure at an even faster pace.  This is why I write about trade issues so much.  Our economy is being absolutely eviscerated, and the Obama administration is pushing another giant trade deal which will greatly accelerate this process.

We are committing national economic suicide by running colossal trade deficits year after year.  But instead of addressing our problems, our “leaders” just continue to conduct business as usual.

And to make themselves look good, they just keep manipulating the numbers until they seem “reasonable”.  As I mentioned above, the negative number for Q1 is causing a lot of consternation in Washington, so now the Bureau of Economic Analysis is going to modify the way that GDP is calculated once again.  The following comes from Bloomberg…

The way some parts of U.S. gross domestic product are calculated are about to change in the wake of the debate over persistently depressed first-quarter growth.

In a blog post published Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysislisted a series of alterations it will make in seasonally adjusting data used to calculate economic growth. The changes will be implemented with the release of the initial second-quarter GDP estimate on July 30, the BEA said.

Although the agency adjusts its figures for seasonal variations, growth in any given first quarter still tends to be weaker than in the remaining three, economists have found, a sign there may be some bias in the data. It’s a phenomenon economists call “residual seasonality.”

Why can’t they just give us honest numbers?

Meanwhile, we also learned on Friday that corporate profits declined again during the first quarter of 2015.  This was the second quarter in a row that we have seen this happen.  The following comes from CNS News…

The BEA report also released data on corporate profits, which showed a decrease from the previous quarter. ‘Profits from current production decreased $125.5 billion in the first quarter, compared with a decrease of $30.4 billion in the fourth,’ BEA said.

Can you guess the last time that corporate profits declined for two quarters in a row?

It was in 2008.

So many of the exact same red flags that popped up seven years ago are popping up once again.

I know that I must sound like a broken record, but right now there are more signals that another major economic downturn is approaching than there has been at any other time since I started The Economic Collapse Blog in 2009.

Hopefully this summer will be relatively quiet, but I fully expect for events to start accelerating significantly during the second half of this year.

So if you have things that you need to get done before the next crisis arrives, you better hurry up, because time is quickly running out.
