Rep. Walter Jones (R., N.C.) is facing pushback for joining Democrats in voting against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a massive funding bill that would have given U.S. troops a 1.3 percent pay raise.
Jones, who has come under fire from critics for being soft on Iran, was one of the few Republicans to join 146 Democrats is voting against the bill.
Taylor Griffin, a Republican vying to unseat Jones in Congress, criticized the decision in a statement released Monday.
“This vote by Walter Jones against providing for our military demonstrates he is out of touch with eastern North Carolina,” Griffin said “This is the second time in as many years that he has voted against the annual defense funding bill, threatening critical resources for the 110,000 active and retired military personnel in the Third Congressional District. Rep. Jones continues to vote with Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats more often than any North Carolina House Republican.”
“It is clear that Jones has lost focus on the priorities important to the people of eastern North Carolina,” the congressional hopeful added. “It’s time we had an effective congressman with fresh, new ideas to represent the Third Congressional District.”
