President Barack Obama is under the false impression that gun control will be a deterrent to terrorists. In fact, the opposite is true.
Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked White House press secretary Josh Earnest on Thursday if Obama really thinks that gun control would deter terrorists. Earnest responded, "Yes. The president believes that passing common sense gun laws that makes it harder for people with bad intentions to get guns, makes the country safer."
When pressed further by Doocy, Earnest replied, "One thing we do know, is the four fire arms they were wielding we're legally purchased under the laws in place now. That's a fact. So, that might lead some to conclude that we should have made it a little harder for them. Would that have changed the entire outcome? We're still investigating the situation but I guess the question is, why wouldn't we? Why wouldn't we make it harder for them? What's the explanation for that?"
Detroit police chief James Craig has the opposite view of Obama. Craig told CBS Detroit this week that "the fear that armed citizens would return fire serves as a deterrent for a potential terrorist attack in the rust belt city," adding, "If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens." As an example, CBS Detroit cites anincident where a Detroit homeowner shot a potential robber.
The facts prove Craig right.
France has exactly the type of expansive background checks that Obama calls for as well as a ban on military-grade weapons, and yet in the last year they have had to endure the devastating terrorist attacks on November 13, as well as the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the kosher deli that was shot up by an ISIS terrorist.
Norway also has strict gun laws. Gun licenses are only distributed for specific purposes – such as hunting – and handgun licenses can only be obtained by taking "a nine-hour firearm-safety course, pass a written test, and prove active and continuing membership of a shooting club." Concealed carry is not allowed in the country. And yet,Anders Breivik murdered 67 people and wounded 110 others with a gun in Norway.
Wednesday's San Bernadino shooting took place in a state with incredibly strict gun laws. The Fort Hood shooting took place on a military base, where military personnel are not allowed to carry guns. Same with the Chattanooga shooting. And of course there are the attacks on "no gun zone" schools.
There is a clear pattern that gun control laws actually serve as a magnet to terrorists rather than a deterrent. As Crime Reseach Prevention Center president John Lottwrites, "Virtually all of the attacks in America and Europe are taking place where general citizens can’t carry guns for protection. At some point, it has to become apparent to gun control advocates that gun-free zones only protect the killers."
