Joel Benenson, the chief strategist for Hillary Clinton's failed 2016 presidential campaign, hesitated before evading a question Thursday on MSNBC about his candidate potentially having unsavory connections during the election.
MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber said the congressional investigation into alleged collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia could reveal improper activity among "lower- or medium-level" officials within Trump's campaign, rather than more senior figures. Melber turned to Benenson, trying to use Clinton's campaign as an example.
"I'm sure Joel Benenson, on the Clinton side, you can think of people who said they were tight with Hillary who did bad things that you say we didn't know them or they weren't our buddies," Melber said. "But you can find that, right? That's fair."
"Uhh, I don't know" Benenson responded. "There are people who make claims, who say, ‘Yeah, I'm a close associate of so and so,' and they're not."
