Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker tried to win votes from abortion activists Tuesday by proposing a new White House office dedicated to promoting aborting unborn babies.
Booker, a U.S. senator from New Jersey, is one of more than two dozen Democrats hoping to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020.
Banking on abortion activists’ outrage about new pro-life laws in Georgia and Alabama, Booker introduced his plan for defending abortion if elected president.
“It has never been more important to stand in solidarity and join the fight to ensure that all women have access to reproductive health care and abortion rights,” Booker said in a statement. “These far-right attacks on women’s rights must be understood as an attack on all of our rights.”
One of his top priorities is to create a new office that will promote abortion on demand. Though Booker said his White House Office of Reproductive Freedom would advocate for maternal and infant health care as well, he made it clear that abortion would be the focus.
“On Day One, I will create a White House Office of Reproductive Freedom, charged with coordinating and affirmatively advancing abortion rights and access to reproductive health care across my Administration,” Booker promised.
He also would work to end the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions in Medicaid. Until recently, the amendment has had strong bipartisan support. Now Democrats — who receive huge campaign donations from the abortion industry — want it gone.
Booker’s plan also would overturn Trump administration rules that take away tax dollars from Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups, and would force employers, regardless of their beliefs, to pay for contraception, including forms that may cause abortions.
A few weeks ago, the New Jersey senator promised to nominate activist judges to the courts as well.
“Cory is committed to not only appointing judges and Supreme Court justices who would uphold Roe v. Wade, but would take it further by vowing as president to sign legislation passed by Congress that would make Roe v. Wade federal law, even if the Supreme Court has overturned it,” his campaign spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told NJ Advance Media.
Booker’s pro-abortion position is extreme. He recently voted against a bill to require that medical care be provided to newborns who survive abortions. His voting record is 100-percent pro-abortion.
In March, he blasted Trump and pro-life Republicans for enacting policies that “literally … could cause people’s death.” One of his examples was the efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, which kills more unborn babies than any other group in America, the Washington Free Beacon reports.
