American Bridge 21st Century, a far-left organization created by Media Matters for America founder and progressive political operative David Brock, may have violated its tax-exempt status by engaging in political activities while describing itself as a nonprofit, according a complaint filed Thursday with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The Patriots Foundation, an Iowa-based right-leaning government watchdog, filed the complaint (which was first reported by Bloomberg) with the IRS. They claim that American Bridge 21st Century is largely a political organization and as a result, has broken tax laws.
“American Bridge has a Super-PAC arm that can spend unlimited sums to influence elections. But the primary purpose of nonprofits organized under section 501(c)4 of the tax code like American Bridge cannot be politics. The complaint quotes material given to potential donors to the nonprofit arm in 2017 saying the organization’s mission is ‘to take on Donald Trump,’” Bloomberg’s Bill Allison wrote.
The group physically tracks and monitors Republican candidates and officials. It utilizes social media to distribute its findings.
“Behind the scenes, (Brock’s) network of organizations have engaged in very troubling behavior that warrants serious investigation,” said Craig Robinson, founder of The Patriots Foundation.
According to records, American Bridge 21st Century has spent $10 million in advertising in battleground states to attack President Trump. The group’s ad accusing Mr. Trump of leaving the country unprepared for the coronavirus pandemic by shipping medical supplies to China prompted the President to call it “fake news” in a tweet published Wednesday morning.

Brock, a longtime ally of Bill and Hillary Clinton, has dedicated most of his career to attacking conservatives and right-leaning media. However, he began his career as a conservative before becoming a Democrat and Clinton shill in the late-1990s.
Leftist billionaire George Soros has been a top donor to American Bridge 21st Century. Soros also funds Media Matters through his Open Society Foundation. Media Matters for America is associated with American Bridge 21st Century, with Brock being the founder of both organizations.
The ethics complaint accused the foundation of engaging in “serious and deliberate violations of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (“IRC”) and abused its tax-exempt status” and outlined specific examples, referring to the far-left group as “AB21CF” throughout.
“Specifically, as detailed below, AB21CF is not operated exclusively for an exempt- purpose; is operated primarily for political purposes; has participated in an impermissible excess benefit transaction with its founder David Brock and True Blue Media LLC; has provided an improper private benefit to Brock and True Blue; has used its income and assets for the personal gain of Brock; and has engaged in commercial, for-profit business activity through its investment in True Blue Media,” the complaint stated.
It added that “AB21CF appears to have abandoned any attempts at credibly describing itself as a social welfare organization under section 501(c)(4). Instead, it has become singularly focused on one mission, ‘to take on Donald Trump.’”
