“President Obama has demanded a clean, hassle-free vote on raising, yet again, the debt ceiling; he should not and will not get it. The debt ceiling fight is another much needed opportunity to refocus on what got us into this mess: years of runaway government spending. AFP urges members of Congress to ensure that any debt limit increase puts the country on a path to balance the budget without raising taxes.”
“In reality, reaching the debt limit (again) is only a symptom of our real problem – years of government overspending. Congress and the President should take every opportunity to enact real spending cuts. The debt ceiling is one, but not the only, opportunity to cut spending. The sequester and CR both should also bring real cuts to the federal budget.
“We’re looking at a federal budget that each year spends more than $3.5 trillion. Yet the President and some in Congress are already saying the remaining $85 billion cuts in the remaining sequester are too deep even though it’s less than one-half of one percent of the total federal budget. The majority of American families have had to cut their family budgets by far more over the last four years of this Administration and they expect the federal government to do the same.
“Government overspending is the biggest threat to economic prosperity that we face, and stopping it is the only way to deal with our skyrocketing national debt.”
