A man in a stolen red pickup truck allegedly opened fire on two police officers in West Virginia at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day. The officers stopped the truck because it had been declared stolen. The shooting happened on the westbound side of I-64.
According to WOWK TV, after the man in the red truck shot at the officers, another man in a different car opened fire on the police as well. The shooter then drove away and pulled off of the highway, where he was arrested. It is not clear what the relationship between the two shooters is.
Donna Hinkle, an employee at the Greenbrier County 911 center, said that both police officers are in the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. One suspect was also brought into the hospital to treat a gunshot wound, while the other was later brought into custody.
Investigators said they are still searching for a possible third suspect. While the search area has expanded, they began by searching the woods along I-64.
I-64 was closed indefinitely because it is considered a crime scene. The police said they will hold a press conference at 8 a.m. on Friday morning.
