You would think that SXSW would be a place where some of the brightest people could come together and talk about cutting edge solutions to the world’s problems. Sadly, one of the biggest stories to come out of the tech conference is a speech by Al Gore claiming anyone who disagrees with climate change needs to pay a price. How is it that the left can celebrate diversity of opinion while at the same time shouting down anyone who disagrees?
The Chicago Tribune reported, “Former Vice President Al Gore on Friday called on SXSW attendees to punish climate-change deniers, saying politicians should pay a price for rejecting ‘accepted science.'” The Chicago Tribune reported that Gore told the audience “we need to put a price on denial in politics.” “I want to ask you, what kind of country and what kind of world do you want to live in? What does the First Amendment really even mean? Do you have a right to free speech? Do you have a right to freedom of thought? Do you have a right to exist if your thoughts are spoken out loud and they happen to disagree with others?” Glenn said on radio. “This happened at SXSW – a big meeting of high tech entrepreneurs, artists. This is youth. This is the future,” Glenn said. “Al Gore has given a speech at South by Southwest and everybody who applauded should have been ashamed of themselves because he said it’s time to make climate deniers pay. There needs to be some sort of a fine, a penalty, for those who deny climate change because he’s had enough. What kind of fascistic country are we turning into?” “What the hell is wrong with the people at SXSW, where you stand there like a bunch of rubes or boobs applauding someone saying, ‘I’m going to take away someone else’s right to disagree with science.'” Glenn pointed out that our understanding of science and the world is constantly changing and we should not be punishing anyone for asking questions.
