Rep. Cummings
House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) on Monday demanded private emails from Trump Administration officials to determine if they violate record-keeping laws.
In a letter to White House lawyer Pat Cipollone, Cummings suggested that Robert Mueller discovered evidence of violations of record-keeping law and called out Steve Bannon by name.
Bannon admitted to using a BlackBerry for “work-related communications” and Mueller says that “he took no steps to preserve these work communications.”
Cummings’ request has a July 10 deadline.
Politico reported:
House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings said his request, with a July 10 deadline, marks the start of a new review of the private email practices of Trump administration officials that appear to violate federal record-keeping laws. The Maryland Democrat noted that he had made narrower requests for information months ago, such as details about Jared Kushner’s contacts with foreign officials via text and “apparent violations” by “Ivanka Trump, Steve Bannon and K.T. McFarland.”
“The White House’s complete obstruction of the committee’s investigation for the past six months is an affront to our Constitutional system of government,” Cummings wrote in a letter to White House lawyer Pat Cipollone.
Last year Cummings began to harass Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner about their use of personal email — all of a sudden the Democrats care about “sensitive” information being exchanged over personal emails.
Where were the Democrats all these years when Hillary Clinton conducted official government business and transmitted classified information over a private email system while she was the head of the Department of State?
Hillary Clinton, her aides and her lawyers then destroyed 33,000 emails under subpoena and took hammers to her BlackBerrys and iPads and the Democrats didn’t even blink an eye.
A spokesman for Jim Jordan (OH), the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, said the Presidential Records Act “was not intended to create a fishing license for Chairman Cummings to pry into the private communications of the first family. This is yet another example of Democrats’ obsession with finding some rationale to impeach the President.”
