A twice deported illegal alien with a 2013 drunk driving conviction and seven different aliases was arrested after fleeing hitting and killing a woman cyclist on Sunday while drunk driving according to Alabama police and local media. In addition to manslaughter and fleeing the scene, he was also charged with receiving stolen property, a gun that was found in his pick-up truck. ICE has reportedly placed a hold on him.
Jose Luis Alonso-De Leon, 36, was driving in Fairhope, Alabama after 12 noon when he switched lanes to pass a vehicle and hit Amelia “Amy” Hawkins, 48 and a mother of two, who was riding a bicycle on the opposite shoulder. Hawkins, who was wearing a helmet, was killed. Police say Alonso-De Leon failed a breathalyzer test but that they are awaiting results of a blood test.

Alabama State Troopers are currently on scene of a fatal hit and run crash that occurred around 12:25 p.m. today in Baldwin County on County Road 13 north of AL 104. The crash involved a Dodge pick-up and a bicyclist. The cyclist was killed. The driver of the Dodge left the scene of the crash but was apprehended by Fairhope Police a short distance away at Baldwin Square Shopping Center. We’ll provide a release once troopers clear up from the scene and make next of kin notification later this afternoon.At approximately 12:25 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, Alabama State Troopers responded to the scene of a fatal crash involving a bicycle on County 13 north of AL 104. Jose Luis Alonso-De Leon, 36, of Silverhill, was traveling south on County 13 in a 2003 Dodge Ram pick-up when he attempted to pass another vehicle. Amelia Hawkins, 48, of Daphne was traveling north on a bicycle along the northbound shoulder of County 13. During the passing maneuver, Alonso-De Leon collided with Hawkins and continued to travel south without stopping; he was apprehended by Fairhope Police a short distance away at the Baldwin Square Shopping Center. A subsequent search of his vehicle yielded a firearm that had been reported stolen. Alonso-De Leon was charged with Manslaughter, Felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident (with Injury/Death) and Receiving Stolen Property; he was placed in the Baldwin County Jail in Bay Minette. Nothing further is available as troopers continue to investigate the crash.”

WALA-TV reported on the prosecutor’s difficulty in tracking down the aliases allegedly used by Alonso-De Leon.
Prosecutors said they have their hands full trying to figure out the suspect’s criminal background because he has used a lot of different names.“We have him listed under seven different aliases,” said Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz.”It will be a long process for us to go through each and every one of those aliases. We’re going to have to rely a lot on fingerprints and prior photographs taken during the booking process in a variety of different jails.”Alonso-De Leon is being held on a $500,000 bond.”
