The top Democrat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence suggested Wednesday that Americans are losing patience with the special counsel’s investigation of Trump campaign links to Russia.
“I think the American public will be tired of it if this is not wound down in this calendar year,” Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said of the investigation during an interview at CodeCon, an annual computer coding conference hosted by ReCode.
The investigation, which is being led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, started just over a year ago, on May 17, 2017. Warner’s committee has been conducting a similar investigation since January 2017.
Warner’s comments are supported by a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released last week which showed that nearly 60 percent of respondents think Mueller’s investigation should end within the next six months.
Warner has avoided saying that his committee has found evidence of Trump campaign collusion. But he said Wednesday that President Trump’s comments about the Mueller investigation suggest that he is guilty of something. (RELATED: Warner: Trump Aides’ Contacts With Russians Could Be ‘Coincidences’)
“This is not the actions of someone…who has nothing to hide,” Warner asserted.
In an interview earlier this month, Warner acknowledged that contacts between Trump associates and Russians “may all be simply a set of coincidences.”
