Hypocrites!
The IRS has placed a $70,000 tax lien on MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry, which apparently comes as a complete surprise for the cable news host who has in the past announced that she pays her taxes "with a smile."
The notice against the MSNBC host and her husband, James Perry, was filed on April 6, the Winston-Salem Journal reported, citing Forsyth County Hall of Justice documents.
Harris-Perry, who is also a professor at Wake Forest University, said Wednesday in an email to the Journal that although she was aware of her outstanding debt, she was unaware that the federal tax agency had placed a lien on her.
"We were aware that we would continue to need to work to pay off the 2013 debt," her email read.
She explained that although they were already working to pay off their debt, a series of "personal crises" had slowed their payoff progress considerably.
Harris-Perry, who once said in 2010 that she would pay her "taxes with a smile," also told the Journal that she and her husband paid off $21,721 of their debt when they filed earlier this week.
The remaining balance of $48,581, which is from a period ending Dec. 31, 2013, is still owed.
The cable news host said that neither she nor her husband were contacted by IRS agents prior to the notice being filed. She also said that she has an "official payment plan" with the IRS.
The deadline for American taxpayers to file their 2014 returns was Wednesday.
Harris-Perry, who once joked on social mediathat she tries not to pay her taxes "as a way of taking my 40 acres secretly," told the Journal that she and her husband would pay off their remaining debt as soon as possible.
Harris-Perry's tax woes are not a first for MSNBC: Fellow anchor Al Sharpton allegedly owes the IRS roughly $3 million, according to a 2014 New York Times report.
