On the same day the senators were sworn in for the impeachment trial, I was in my favorite coffee shop in the progressive Chicago neighborhood where I live (the fifth most liberal ZIP code in the country). Many suffer from especially bad cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome here, as I've recounted in these pages over the past few years.
At the table next to me, a young couple was talking loudly about impeachment. The man expressed excitement that the trial was finally underway, because "he will soon be gone." The woman was trying to explain to him that, contrary to his understanding, it takes 67 senators, not a simple majority, to remove a president from office. I wanted to chime in that, in fact, the Democrats will be lucky to hold their own caucus (47) together. But I decided not to add to the man's obvious misery.
While the Trump-haters continue in their quest to nullify the results of the election, our president keeps fulfilling one campaign promise after another. On the same day the senators were sworn in: (1) he inked a trade deal with China, (2) USMCA passed 90-10 in the Senate, (3) the stock market closed at another record high as a result of his economic policies, including tax reform and de-regulation, and (4) more conservative judges were confirmed as he continues to remake the third branch of government at a record pace.
All of this is reflected in the fact that he continues to rise steadily in the betting markets to the highest level of his presidency so far. In sum, those voters who are not blinded by derangement for Mr. Trump are seeing through the impeachment stunt and recognizing he has delivered on the economy, deregulation, trade, foreign policy, and appointing conservative judges. Further, as more voters become more focused on the Democratic primaries, they will recognize the threat the candidates pose to the unprecedented peace and prosperity Mr. Trump has delivered.
