West Virginia has become the latest state to pass a law to require food stamp recipients to work to receive government benefits.
West Virginia governor Jim Justice, who changed parties from Democrat to Republican late last year, signed a bill into law Tuesday to impose a federal 20-hour weekly work requirement for food stamp recipients.
According to the Associated Press, the work requirement “applies to people ages 18 to 49 who aren’t pregnant, disabled or military veterans, have no dependents and receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.”
The Trump administration has been hardening the work requirements on food stamp recipients.
“Long-term dependency has never been part of the American dream. USDA’s goal is to move individuals and families from SNAP back to the workforce as the best long-term solution to poverty,” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said lastmonth when announcing the administration’s initiative to reduce food stamp dependency.
Advocates of the West Virginia bill say it will eliminate fraud in the program, but opponents say it will further hurt struggling people.
