In the name of “equitable changes,” Kalamazoo, Michigan City Council members have decided to decriminalize public urination, defecation, and littering, among other misdemeanors, despite business owners’ outrage decrying the policy.
The Blaze On Monday, the Kalamazoo City Commission voted to water down some misdemeanor crimes so that they are merely civil infractions in the code of ordinances. Part of their reasoning was that people convicted of these crimes could have their lives negatively affected. (What about the people who have to live with it in their neighborhood?)
“One thing a lot of people don’t realize is a misdemeanor is for life as much as a felony. So many things come with a permanent record on somebody’s record,” explained Commissioner Chris Praedel. The far-left mmission voted unanimously to accept the changes.
Business owners are in an uproar over the changes. “We have a major problem downtown, and I don’t understand why it would even be proposed that the law would be less restricted than it is now,” said Cherri’s Chocol’art owner Cherri Emery.
“It’s not just the urination part of it. The part of it that’s really upsetting to us is people approaching other people, people following some of their employees to their cars and asking them for money, and when they get to the car, and they’re still not giving them money, we had one guy that started throwing rocks at their cars…” she said.
Pop City Popcorn co-owner Becky Bil said she was concerned that aggressive and unstable panhandlers might drive people away from the downtown area. Bil shared that the city recently installed an approximately $100,000 fully furnished restroom near the Kalamazoo Mall – which houses Bil’s and Emery’s businesses – to help curb urine and feces on the streets. She adds, however, that the new bathroom is usually locked.
Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson said that part of the reason for the changes was a concern about “equity”(for criminals and vagrants?) in the community.
There are оther states besides Michigan that have made this mоve. Chesa Bоudin, the district attоrney fоr San Franciscо at the time, had stated in 2019: “We will nоt prоsecute cases invоlving quality-оf-life crimes. Public camping, оffering оr sоliciting sex, urinating in public, blоcking a sidewalk, etc. are all crimes that shоuldn’t and wоn’t be prоsecuted.
