Paying More For Your Pet – Thanks Obamacare

Obamacare is for the birds.
And the cats, and the dogs, and the ferrets and the lions, tigers, and bears. Oh my!
Sounds dumb, but those are the facts, folks. Thanks to Obamacare, certain medical devices are now being taxed to help pay for the program. And lest you think it a highly specialized line item, note that some of the items being taxed include rubber gloves, syringes, centrifuges, and even exam tables and medical lights.
A friend recently emailed this copy of their latest veterinary bill, with permission to use.

vet-bill

As you can see, this vet put a charge on the bill directly referring to Obamacare. But many vets will simply add the fee in to the cost of, say, centrifugation, as happened to a member of my family just this week. So many consumers won’t even realize the problem.
Three dollars may seem inconsequential, but like any tax, the out the door cost depends entirely on the visit in question. The more “medical devices” used, the higher the cost. And even with the vet in question adding a cover-all line item, that is no guarantee that other prices weren’t similarly raised across the board to absorb the additional tax expense. How much more are you going to pay in the end?
What it means in principle is even more important. This is a tax that affects middle- and low-income pet owners more. It is a tax directly aimed at struggling households. In the debate over raising the minimum wage, the administration and their MSM surrogates keep telling us how every penny counts. We keep hearing about lowering the burden for lower income families. But when it comes to Obama’s legacy, the only thing they seem ready to lower is expectations.
It’s just one more example of how Democrats have no problem taking money from any pocket in a pinch to shore up this ill-conceived, poorly designed, disastrously implemented, so called health care plan. Now even our pets pay.
A potential increase to the cost of pet care has not gone unreported in the last few years. However, it was also widely reported that veterinary equipment would be exemptfrom the device tax. If it were, there would be no increase to veterinary care expenses today. Clearly, that is not the case.
The Right Scoop has requested more information from the veterinarian’s office and we will update this story in the event any additional information comes to light.
