Following the tragic shooting of 9 people in a Charleston, South Carlina church, President Obama saw the opportunity to push his gun control agenda.
President Obama renewed his call for stricter gun laws Thursday following a shooting spree at a Charleston, S.C. church that killed nine people.
"We don't have all the facts, but we do know that, once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun," Obama said.
Obama's remarks were not unlike the 13 others he's given following a mass shooting during his presidency. But this time, he said the usual condolences could not express "the heartache and the sadness and the anger we feel" about the overnight shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday night.
Is that true? Not according to FBI Director James Comey who said at a press conference that Dylann Roof's application to purchase a gun never should have gone through. The FBI background check failed to uncover Roof's felony drug charge a few weeks before the shootings. Thus, no additional registration or background check laws could have stopped Roof, who was able to buy a gun because of bureaucratic incompetence.
The gunman charged in the Charleston, South Carolina, church massacre should not been allowed to purchase the weapon used in the attack, FBI Director James Comey said Friday as he outlined a series of missed opportunities and incomplete paperwork that allowed the transaction to take place.
The problem stemmed from an arrest of Dylann Roof in South Carolina weeks before the shooting in which police say he admitted to possessing illegal drugs.
Under federal rules, that admission alone should have been enough to disqualify him from an April gun purchase. But, Comey said, the FBI background check examiner who evaluated Roof’s request to buy a gun never saw the arrest report because the wrong arresting agency was listed on the list rap sheet that she reviewed.
The transaction went through after three days because the examiner didn’t have enough information to authorize or deny it.
“If she had seen that police report,” Comey said, “that purchase would have been denied.”
Comey said he learned about the problem on Thursday night and that FBI officials planned to meet Friday with relatives of the nine victims of last month’s church shooting in Charleston. He said he had also directed an internal 30-day review into how the FBI uses criminal background checks in gun transactions.
This gives the lie to Obama's claim that if his gun control agenda had been passed, the tragedy in Charleston could have been avoided. Of course, the only people who actually believe that tripe are 5 year olds and liberals. But that doesn't stop the press from promoting the notion that taking guns out of the hands of law abiding Americans is the answer to gun violence.
You have to wonder how many other criminals or mentally unbalanced people have slipped through the cracks and been able to purchase a handgun. I'm sure Dylann Roof won't be the last to come to our attention as someone who skirted the law because of incompetent officials.
