Five are confirmed dead after a shooter unleashed a barrage of bullets on Capital Gazette employees Thursday.

The suspect is being described as a white man in his 20’s.

The shooter reportedly used a shotgun and had ‘fake grenades’ on him.

Investigators said the shooter had no ID on his person and was not cooperating; he even damaged his fingertips to avoid identification.

Authorities have identified the shooter using facial recognition software. His name has not been released, however; he is from Maryland according to police.

CNN’s Oliver Darcy reported: Law enforcement sources tell CNN the Capital Gazette shooting suspect’s fingerprints were altered, making it difficult to identify him that way. But the suspect was identified using facial recognition software, one law enforcement official said.

Senior law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told NBC News that the suspect, a white man in his 20s or 30s wearing a black T-shirt and olive-green pants, had been identified through the use of facial recognition software. They said earlier that he had somehow obscured his fingerprints, making identification more difficult.

Local authorities were preparing to execute a search warrant for the suspect’s home. They would not release his name, but sources told NBC News that he is from Maryland.

Anne Arundel County Police Lt. Ryan Frashure said the weapon he used was a “long gun,” but he did not elaborate.
