The manner in which our military has been treated by the Obama Administration has been absolutely disgusting, and it just seems to be getting worse by the day. According to a report from the New York Post, the Defense Department is sending out thousands of pink slips to deployed soldiers, many of which are commanding officers, in the coming weeks.
According to the report, last week over 1,100 Army captains were told that they’ll be retired from the military after their current deployment, and there’s more to come. Keep in mind that these are the people who know the enemy the best because they have spent a lot of time overseas, so letting them go will have a drastic impact on the effectiveness of our military.
While it’s no secret that there was going to be a drawdown, what is surprising is the manner in which these loyal soldiers are being discarded from their beloved military.
As Former US Army Capt. Jonathan Hendershott put it, “What is astonishing is that the Defense Department thought it would be appropriate to notify deployed soldiers — men and women risking their lives daily in combat zones — that they’ll be laid off after their current deployment.”
Indeed, getting a pink slip while deployed can only add to the already high levels of stress that our soldiers experience. On MilitaryFamily.org, the wife of a member of the US Army wrote, “On some level I knew the drawdowns were inevitable, but I guess I never expected to be simultaneously worried about a deployment to Afghanistan and a pink slip because my husband’s service is no longer needed.”
The major operations in Iraq have been ended, and in Afghanistan they’re winding down. Because of this, combined with budget cuts, the Army is projected to shrink from having 520,000 troops to the smallest size since before World War II with 440,000 troops, which many are saying could lead to national security risks.
Obama is basically taking the soldiers with the most counterinsurgency experience and separating them from the rest of the military. These soldiers are combat-experienced leaders who know their enemy well and have learned the best manner in which to fight them.
A senior Defense Department official warned, “If the force is smaller, there’s less margin for error. Let’s face it — things are pretty uncertain out there.”
One thing is for certain, it’s bad enough these brave soldiers have to fear for their lives on a daily basis. Creating such a distraction while they’re deployed is not only heartless but it shows the true contempt this administration has for our troops.
