“We need to have an open and honest conversation and address the harsh realities about what could happen and what it would mean to Illinois residents, especially those most vulnerable. It’s not an easy conversation to have, but it certainly is the right thing to do given what’s at stake. Now is the time to have this conversation.”– Ty Fahner
(Editor’s Note: The Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago long has been sounding the alarm about the Illinois pension debt crisis and the need for pension reform. Hearing virtually no candid conversation to date from top candidates and politicians about the strong possibility the state Supreme Court could toss out the law that attempted to address our pension problem, the committee launched a new website and issued the following letter and vivid illustrations of what this crisis is costing all of us in Illinois. We reprint them here with permission.)
As you know, the Illinois General Assembly passed pension reform legislation which was signed into law in December 2013.
The legislation was challenged and will eventually proceed to the Illinois Supreme Court.
There is not a single more important question to ask candidates seeking your endorsement for office.
What if the Illinois Supreme Court overturns pension reform?
Sincerely,
Ty Fahner
President, Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago
