In a recent shootout between Mexican police and drug cartel members, three officers were killed. According to a Justice Department document, the cartel members used "Kingery" grenades during the battle.
William La Jeunesse reported on Happening Now about how this shootout bears some resemblance to Operation Fast and Furious, in which the ATF allowed weapons to reach Mexican drug cartels as part of a failed effort to track the firearms.
The weapons were later recovered at numerous Mexican crime scenes, along with one in which U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed.
La Jeunesse explained that U.S. officials were aware of bomb maker Jean Baptiste Kingery's activities, but allowed him to continue for years until his eventual 2011 arrest by Mexican authorities. Kingery was also converting AK-47 rifles into automatic weapons.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) believes the Obama administration's desire to implement strict gun control was at the heart of the decision not to prosecute Kingery and to undertake Operation Fast and Furious.
"I think what you see is an administration that I'm beginning to think really did want to let bad things happen in the hopes that they would get an assault weapons ban," said Issa.
