Harry Reid Says Everybody Wants To Pay More Taxes

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that every wants to pay more in taxes.

“The only people who feel there shouldn’t be more coming into the federal government from the rich people are the Republicans in the Congress. Everybody else, including the rich people, are willing to pay more. They want to pay more.”

Hey, who knew we all wanted higher taxes? I’m so glad Harry Reid cleared that up for me.

Something tells me Reid didn’t mention that federal tax revenue set a record this year. The problem with the budget is spending, not that they don’t take enough from Americans in taxes.

Senate Majority Leader Reid said Thursday that “everybody” is not only willing, butwants to pay more taxes, including “rich people.” But there’s just one problem: Congressional Republicans won’t let them.

Speaking with KNPR – National Public Radio in Nevada – Reid wasted little time blaming Republican “irrationality” for the recent government shutdown:

“It’s really hard to try to be rational and logical with people who are illogical and not rational.”

His prime example of irrationality was the 45 attempts by Republicans to repeal or defund ObamaCare. Reid said that strategy fits Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Yep, good old Harry Reid – once again stepping up to the plate and displaying that “civil discourse” that President Obama so professes to yearn for in Washington politics.

Of course, as is always the case, Reid’s panacea for all that ails Washington and our country is higher taxes. Moreover, he said that the only thing standing in the way is the GOP:

KNPR Host: Would you make concessions on things like Medicare and Social Security if it helped lead to a long term deal?

Reid: Listen, we’re willing — the president has stuck his neck way out. He’s willing to do a lot of stuff with spending, but there has to be some reciprocity here. Once Republicans decide that they’re going to let — keep in mind, also, that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The rich know that. The rich are willing to pay more. They’re not the ones out here saying, ‘please don’t tax me.’

The only people who feel there shouldn’t be more coming in to the federal government from rich people are the Republicans in the Congress. Everybody else, including rich people, are willing to pay more. They want to pay more. So, yeah, but we’re going to have to have mainstream Republicans step up again.

Harry Reid may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but one thing even some conservatives can agree on (including this blogger) is that the senator from Nevada is one helluva a wordsmith.

Notice, he doesn’t answer the question about entitlement reform at all, choosing instead to parrot the suddenly popular phrase, the president has “stuck his neck out,” whatever that means. Notice also his use of “reciprocity,” which means the same thing to Democrats as “a balanced approach.” This translates into: “Whenever Republicans want to discuss budget reform or lowering the national debt, we Democrats will insist on raising taxes as a part of any agreement.”

But, hey, at least it’s good to know that not only is everyone willing to pay more taxes, everyone wants to pay more taxes. Now, if the Republicans in Congress will just step aside and let all of America have its way, all will be well in Washington again. Until next time, that is.
