If Obamacare’s computer glitches, increased premiums and war on small business weren’t enough, concerned Americans can add a hidden abortion surcharge to their list of grievances against the overbearing health care law. Currently, insurance companies can hide whether their plans cover abortion and can charge enrollees a $1 monthly abortion surcharge. It is because of this hidden fee, which violates religious consciences across America, that Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) has introduced a bill to provide full disclosure of abortion coverage for each plan offered on the health insurance exchanges.
Smith, Co-chair of the Congressional Pro-life Caucus, explained why he felt compelled to introduce the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act,
When Smith and some of his 70 co-sponsors attempted to find out more about the abortion surcharge from health care operatives, they ran into a wall of secrecy anddoublespeak as suspicious as the law itself.
Nevertheless, pro-life organizations are pleased with Smith and his colleagues’ effort. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life organization The Susan B. Anthony List, released the following statement Wednesday:
A new study from The Charlotte Lozier Institute found that between 71,000 and 111,500 additional abortions per year could be subsidized by taxpayers via federal premium tax credits of the Multi State Plans and Medicaid expansion in Obamacare. These researchers called numerous health plans to determine which plans offered abortion and discovered it was nearly impossible for individuals to know which plans force enrollees to pay a mandatory abortion surcharge.
It’s time for the Obama administration to stop toying with Americans’ religious freedom and own up to its not-so-secret abortion agenda.
So much for being “the most transparent administration in history.”
