Earlier Monday, Obama announced sanctions against seven Russian officials and several non-government individuals the White House says are aiding Putin’s efforts to destabilize and ultimately annex Crimea.
“If he thinks that sanctioning seven Russians out of a population of, what, 150 million is a sanction, he’s living in a different world.Instead, we should be sending Ukraine weapons, something the administrationdenied because it thinks ‘somehow to arm the victim of aggression is a provocation.’”
Russia’s deputy prime minister, one of those sanctioned, mocked Obama, asking if he thought through what he would do if those being sanctioned had no holdings in the U.S. to sanction. (The deputy prime minister has no bank accounts or property outside of Russia.)
Crimean Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov, who was also hit by sanctions, tweeted a photoshopped image of Obama wearing a Russian colonel’s uniform, asking if the president would be promoted to colonel after the “successful campaign to return Crimea.”
Krauthammer concluded:
“This really is a humiliating response by a president who can’t even get the Europeans to join him in effective sanctions.”
To be frank, it didn’t even appear that Obama himself believed what he was saying Monday as he was saying it. This is a president who appears to be out of gas.
