Investigators Recover 30,000 of Lois Lerner’s “Lost” Emails

Earlier today, the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) reported that as many as 30,000 of Lois Lerner’s “missing” emails may have have finally been recovered. Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa, California Republican said:

“Though it is unclear whether TIGTA has found all of the missing Lois Lerner e-mails,
there may be significant information in this discovery.”

Despite the IRS’s repeated insistence that Lerner’s emails were “beyond recovery,” congressional committees said Friday that the IRS’s inspector general reported to Congress that it may have discovered as many as 30,000 of the lost Lois Lerner emails.

The emails have been requested by the Senate Finance Committee, the House Oversight Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee. Investigators want the emails in order to determine Ms. Lerner’s mindset at the time of the crime and to see who she was speaking with as the agency was holding up conservative groups’ applications prior to the 2012 Presidential election.

Ms. Lerner headed the IRS division that improperly scrutinized and blocked conservative groups’ applications for nonprofit status. During the non-profit application approval process the IRS made ongoing requests of Tea Party groups and other conservative applicants for membership rosters, emails, copies of social media postings and chilling demands to know members names, what was discussed at meetings, what kind of reading material was common among members and other intrusive information.

The IRS spent years denying nonprofit statuses for conservative nonprofits
while allowing left-leaning nonprofits no such scrutiny.

Mr. Issa said the new discovery signals that the IRS has once again failed to give a complete story to Congress. The agency waited months before telling Congress it had lost the Lerner emails, and later said it had no way to recover them.  The inspector general discovered the emails among 744 disaster recovery tapes that backup the IRS system, and found up to 30,000 Lerner emails from 2009 to 2011, which covers the period she supposedly lost in a computer hard drive crash.

Lerner maintained that after the computer crash the “missing” emails were irretrievable. While government officials also insisted that Lerner’s hard-drive with the emails was irretrievable, they also soon revealed that they had “misplaced” the hard-drive, thus prohibiting outside technicians from recovering the emails.

Earlier this month, the IRS admitted that they never really looked for
the missing emails or Lois Lerner’s harddrive.

“It took investigators several weeks and some forensic effort to get the emails off these tapes,” a congressional investigator revealed. It may take several more weeks of continued searching to recover all data from the voluminous number of disaster recovery tapes and convert it to a readable format.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who has vigorously pursued the truth behind the IRS scandal, stated:

“The Oversight Committee will be looking for information about her mindset and who she was communicating with outside the IRS during a critical period of time when the IRS was targeting conservative groups. This discovery also underscores the lack of cooperation Congress has received from the IRS. The agency first failed to disclose the loss to Congress and then tried to declare Lerner’s e-mails gone and lost forever. Once again it appears the IRS hasn’t been straight with Congress and the American people.”

In April of this year Lerner was held in contempt of Congress yet no Grand Jury has been convened to hear the evidence and she was not prosecuted by the Eric Holder’s Justice Department as required by federal law.

Did anyone really believe that Lerner’s emails were suddenly lost, the backups were lost, they disappeared from every other IRS computer, the hard drive crashed, and then, Oops, they somehow lost the hard drive too? Just think, without this intrusion into the election process Obamacare might just be a figment of an ousted President’s imperialistic imagination.
