During her speech to the graduating seniors in Topeka, Kansas, Michelle Obama decided to bring up racism. That is not surprising, given that the ceremony marked the anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. The shocking part was that according to Michelle, we’ve made very little progress since 60 years ago.
“This issue is so sensitive, it’s so complicated, so bound up with a painful history,” Michelle commented during her speech, “No matter what you do, the point is to never be afraid to talk about these issues, particularly the issue of race, because even today, we still struggle to do that.”
Michelle continued on to reveal what she called an “unfortunate reality”, claiming, “We know that today in American, too many folks are still stopped on the street because of the color of their skin, or they’re made to feel unwelcome because of where they come from, or they’re bullied because of who they love.”
Michelle then went on to describe her own experiences with racism, claiming that she lived through segregation despite the Brown v. Board legislation that passed a decade before she was born. She also stated that she wasn’t in a classroom with white children until 1975.
Michelle’s final words to parting seniors?
“We need all of you to ask the hard questions and have the honest conversations because that is the only way we will heal the wounds of the past and move forward to a better future.”
Speaking about asking tough questions and getting the truth—isn’t it about time we had answers to Benghazi?
