Trey Gowdy explained to Bill Hemmer on Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom that there is a difference between exercising prosecutorial discretion on a case by case basis and a broad announcement that certain categories of crimes will no longer be prosecuted.  Furthermore, immigration is a civil matter, not criminal.
So now you’re arguing the president can suspend all civil remedies and added to that, you’re now arguing not only can we not impose sanctions on you, we can confer benefits on you…..Why do you need a Congress or Supreme Court?  Just have a president.
Gowdy remarked that President Obama wants the House of Representatives to over-respond to the executive order on immigration by withholding funding, but he warned that Congress should “not take the bait” since this could lead to a government shutdown.
What the president wants us to do is to over-respond, so our public approval ratings are as low as his.  My personal preference, in terms of strategies, is for the Senate to use Advice and Consent.
The South Carolina Representative said that he preferred to address the immigration problems with a step-by-step strategy rather than a “horrible” and “dangerous” comprehensive bill.
The word comprehensive, people are just in love with it.  You hear it all the time, whether it’s Dodd-Frank or whether it’s the so-called Affordable Care Act.  People just love big bills.  They’re horrible.  They’re dangerous.  You get the ‘Grubers’ of the world when you get big bills.  I would rather go step by step.
