Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee are set to release a report detailing the harsh interrogation techniques used by the CIA overseas after the attacks on 9/11/2001. The report is a 480-page executive summary. The report in its entirety is 6,000-plus-page report Republicans have urged the Democrats to not release the report out of fear that it could create a dangerous environment for America. Now, it looks like the Department of Homeland Security is in agreement.
Yahoo News reports that Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren says, “There is certainly the possibility that the release of this report could cause unrest” and therefore combatant commands have been directed to take protective measures.”
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said of the potential threats, “There are some indications that the release of the report could lead to a greater risk that is posed to U.S. facilities and individuals all around the world. The administration has taken the prudent steps to ensure that the proper security precautions are in place at U.S. facilities around the globe.”
U.S. officials who have read the report say it includes disturbing new details about the CIA’s use of such techniques as sleep deprivation, confinement in small spaces, hu
miliation and the simulated drowning process known as waterboarding. It alleges that the harsh interrogations failed to produce unique and life-saving intelligence — a conclusion disputed by current and former intelligence officials, including CIA Director John Brennan. It also asserts that the CIA lied about the covert program to officials at the White House, the Justice Department and congressional oversight committees.
Although Barack Obama admits that “we tortured some folks,” Earnest added “the president believes that the use of those tactics was unwarranted, that they were inconsistent with our values and did not make us safer.”
Intelligence officials reportedly did not want this report to come out as they are concerned it will spark violence against Americans overseas and possible at home. The report took 5 years at a cost of $40 million to taxpayers to write.
