Nobody marches in the streets promising to work harder so they’ll deserve a raise. But they’re marching to intimidate people into giving them super-sized raises, more than doubling the federal minimum wage and making $15 an hour the new guarantee. Union organizers have set a goal—$15 an hour for everyone.
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Labor unions call it the Fight for 15, to make that the new standard.
One effort is unionizing fast food and other franchises. Millions work in fast food and in other franchises like 7-Eleven, Holiday Inn and other hotels, H&R Block, Gold’s Gym, ReMax realtors, Hertz car rental.
Most franchises are owned by small businesses but Obama appointees are disregarding that with rulings that a whole name brand can be unionized all at once, like all Subways, all McDonalds or all Burger Kings.
Another approach is pressuring local politicians to set state or local minimum wages that dictate raises to $15 an hour.
The old-fashioned way to get a raise was to work hard and ask your boss. The new way is pressure, intimidation, and using government to gang up on him.
